TRAINING TIPS!

Hello you amazing runners!

This week I’ll be sharing my training routine. This year I plan to jog the City2Surf. This means that my training will focus mainly on endurance and not pure speed.

To start out you always want to be wearing comfortable gear as well as have access to water. While it’s tempting to just grab a flavourful Powerade, this isn’t necessarily what is best for you. Having a large amount of water keeps your cells hydrated and replaces the water that you lose in sweat and when you exhale.

Next you want you stretch. It is important that when stretching to start out slowly and build up. This gives your muscles time to stretch and lessens the risk of injury. After stretching it is a good rule of thumb to train on a variety of terrains. This is because the track will not be flat the whole way and it would be a waste of time just training for down hills for example.

As you jog it is best to slowly increase your pace that you do each time you train. This conditions your body and is easier than full blasting it out of the gate. You always want to stretch after your exercise as well. This eases your muscles and will lessen any discomfort felt afterwards.

While you do want to train for a reasonable amount of time per session it is important to not push yourself too hard to avoid overdoing it. Just doing small things before the race will allow you to complete it more quickly and easily.

I hope these top training tips help you prepare for the City2Surf and I look forward to the next blog post where I will talk about diet.

THE JOURNEY BEGINS!

Today is a great day for me as Youth Ambassador for The Shepherd Centre. Today is the day we set the ball rolling. The first steps of running the City2Surf are completed and I haven’t needed to even leave my chair!

Signing up with The Shepherd Centre as our charity of choice is the first thing we have to do before we start training or thinking about running. Signing up with our team allows us to raise funds together and we all know much we can get done when it’s a team effort.

To anyone who is thinking of running the City2Surf feel free to come join our team and have fun while also raising money for The Shepherd Centre. Once you’re set up and in the team you are ready to start fundraising. After you’ve set up your fundraising page, sharing it on Facebook and other social media platforms will bring your wonderful cause to the attention of your friends.

With exposure comes donations to The Shepherd Centre. Bringing this up in a school or local community assembly is also great for getting people to donate. You can also set whacky goals along the way. For example, ‘If we hit $800 in donations I will not eat sugar for a week.’

I hope these fundraising tips help you kick start your fundraising.

Like the saying goes, ‘Every marathon starts with a single step.’

I am looking forward to seeing our team’s progress in the coming weeks – I hope you will sign up and join me. I will be back next week with some training tips!

See you all then.
