Since The Shepherd Centre was founded in 1970, thousands of children and families have passed through our doors. Some families stayed just a short while – most stayed for several years – but very few families kept in touch once their early intervention program was complete. That’s why we’re delighted to announce the launch of our new Alumni Club program, Beyond Sound, which aims to reconnect past graduates of The Shepherd Centre and foster their journey into adulthood.
Supported by a grant from the Coca-Cola Australia Foundation, Beyond Sound is the brainchild of Sharlene Dadd, mother of past graduate, Marcus.
Membership of the Beyond Sound Alumni Club is now open to all past graduates and their families, and includes a range of benefits such as regular newsletters, access to networking and work experience opportunities, mentoring and coaching, as well as the opportunity to participate in exclusive Alumni events.
One of the founding members of the club, past graduate Stephen Tang, is encouraging all graduates of The Shepherd Centre to become involved.
“Not only does the Alumni Club give us a chance to support the next generation, it gives us a plethora of different opportunities and experiences,” Stephen said.
“Personally I am going to find it very rewarding to talk to new parents and tell them about my personal experiences, the quality of life that I have been given and the chances I now have. I also very much look forward to playing with and teaching the next generation.”
Stephen, who is currently in year 11, hopes to work in the field of audiology and hearing technology, and looks forward to building on connections formed through Beyond Sound to help him further his career.
“I love the idea of using corporate ties and relationships that The Shepherd Centre has formed to help past graduates. It is truly amazing to see The Shepherd Centre go above and beyond their call of duty and help past graduates.”
Membership of the Beyond Sound Alumni Club is open to any past graduate of The Shepherd Centre with hearing loss, whether age five or 50+. Parents, grandparents, siblings, other family members and former staff are also welcome, and will be provided with opportunities to reconnect and learn more about supporting their family member with hearing loss across life’s journey.
