Helping deaf children learn to listen and speak for over 50 years

The Shepherd Centre has helped more than 2000 Australian children with hearing loss to develop speech, language and listening skills. Our intensive early intervention program helps give deaf children the support and skills they need to succeed and thrive at mainstream school alongside their hearing classmates. We also work closely with families to give you the knowledge, encouragement and support you may need along the way.

What we’re known for

Family focused, personalised support

Children are unique and their families are too, so we take the time to get to know families and work with you to create the most appropriate support plan for your child. We equip and empower families, and connect you with other families of children with hearing loss so you can feel part of a strong support network.

Ready for school

Our programs are designed to ensure children with hearing loss have all the skills they need to enter school as confident, capable students. Most children who attend The Shepherd Centre typically achieve age-appropriate speech and language skills by the time they get to school.

Support for unilateral and mild hearing loss

We support kids with a range of hearing abilities including unilateral (hearing loss in one ear only) and mild hearing loss. Our research shows that children with all levels of hearing loss can benefit from being supported and equipped to learn how to make the most of the hearing they have access to.

Support hubs and remote access

Each one of our centres provides a full range of services, enabling flexibility for families who can access everything in one place. For those who can’t make it to a centre or who live in remote or rural areas, we deliver support via our Online Telehealth System and outreach workshops.

Child and Family Counselling

When a child is diagnosed with hearing loss, the journey ahead can feel daunting. That’s why we employ a dedicated and experienced team of counsellors who can help you take each step as it comes. They’re the first support people you will meet at The Shepherd Centre and they’re a constant source of support for your family throughout your time with us.

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider

The Shepherd Centre is an approved provider under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. For more information about the Scheme and how your family might be eligible for support, please click here.
