Giving back is a no-brainer – Jason’s story

Jason Grant Shepherd Centre dad, half-marathoner and fundraiser

“We first went to The Shepherd Centre in 2007 when our daughter Madison was 4 years of age. We had been living overseas in Thailand and took the decision to return to Australia as the treatment for Madison there wasn’t helping at all. Since joining The Shepherd Centre things have come along in leaps and bounds and our daughter has now hit high school this year.

“I first decided to run the half marathon was because I was getting FAT… plus I found it a lot easier to just start running without joining gyms or signing up for classes etc and things like this are a lot easier when you have a goal like a half marathon attached to it. Jason Grant 1 resized

“The best thing about running is you can go whenever you want – I prefer to go first thing in the morning before everyone else in my family wakes up. That way my exercise is all done and I don’t miss out on time with my family.

“I suppose you could call me a runner – I’ve been going at it fairly regularly for a couple of years now. I just break out the Spotify and Runkeeper app and go. I wouldn’t call the distance difficult anymore but if you asked me a couple of years ago I would have thought it near impossible. Now I can do a run like this on a weekend and not think about it much.

“I ran the SMH half marathon last year and really enjoyed the experience. It’s great fun with heaps of support on the day. I’d recommend for everyone to try if they can.

“The hardest part is the last 3kms of the race. At the 18km mark you will run past the where the finish line is, down the hill at the Botanical Gardens and then right back up again to the finish line (it feels like it takes a lot longer than you would imagine!).

“Training has been going well until lately – I think I’ve gotten a bit of runners knee, so back to the physio and hopefully back into training in no time.

“I am keen to raise money for The Shepherd Centre because we are always happy and appreciative of the work done by The Shepherd Centre so any little opportunity I can do to help give back is really a no-brainer from our family’s end.”
