Helping Tasmanian children build confidence in reading and writing

Are you based in Hobart or Launceston and have noticed your child finding reading or writing difficult?

Perhaps they guess words instead of sounding them out, mix up spelling patterns, or become frustrated during homework. If your child has hearing loss and/or a history of middle ear infections, and they seem to be falling behind with literacy, The Shepherd Centre’s Sounds Write pilot program could help.

We are running a new Sounds Write pilot program in Hobart and Launceston for children aged 6–12 years. The program begins with a free literacy screening and, if needed, continues with a weekly Sounds Write group program designed to strengthen your child’s reading and writing skills, with the added benefit of hopefully also boosting their confidence at school.

What is Sounds Write?

Sounds Write is an evidence-based literacy approach used in schools across Australia and the UK. It teaches children how spoken sounds connect to written letters and words. This builds strong foundations for both reading and spelling.

At The Shepherd Centre, we use Sounds Write to help children develop the key skills they need to succeed at school and feel confident communicating in everyday life.

What does the pilot include?

The Sounds Write Pilot Program in Tasmania includes:

  • A literacy screening. This is a short, friendly one-on-one check that explores your child’s reading and spelling skills and identifies where extra support may help.

The screening is simple, child-friendly, and takes 20–30 minutes.

You’ll receive clear insights, including your child’s strengths and any areas where they may need extra support, along with guidance on the best next steps to help them succeed

  • A weekly literacy program for eligible children which is delivered in a small, supportive setting using the Sounds Write approach.

How much does it cost?

During the pilot, both the screening and the program are offered at no cost to families, thanks to generous grant funding, for Term 4 of 2025 and Term 1 of 2026.

No referral is needed, we will determine your child’s eligibility following the screening.
