Loud Shirt Day for deaf children

Did you know that hearing loss is the most common disability diagnosed at birth?

By celebrating Loud Shirt Day, schools can show their support for the 12000 Australian kids that face hearing loss every day.  The proceeds raised will go towards The Shepherd Centre, who work towards providing children who are deaf or have hearing needs with the support they need for a high quality of life, and potentially giving them the gift of speech.

Here’s four tips for how your school can get loud for kids with hearing loss, and join 1000’s of other LOUD supporters!

1. Register your school with the Loud Shirt Day website, to get your free host kit and hold a Loud Shirt Day at school
Encourage students to wear or create their loudest shirt, and offer them the opportunity to wear it to school for a gold coin donation. Try organizing activities that allow them to show off their shirt, like a parade or ‘Show and Tell.’

2. Consider student-driven fundraising initiatives
Funds can be raised for Loud Shirt Day through other initiatives such as a bake sale or school market. Allowing students the opportunity to purchase and sell goods to one another with the understanding that all proceeds are directed to charity is a great way to raise funds for Loud Shirt Day in a student-driven way, and encourage empathy for kids with hearing loss.

3. Educate students about hearing loss and the objectives of Loud Shirt Day. Try interactive activities like quizzes, videos or think, pair, share to educate participating students about the objectives of loud shirt day and children with hearing loss. This could include relaying statistics or asking the students questions about what hearing loss means to them, or what they know about hearing loss. This both raises awareness and encourages understanding and empathy.

4. Have fun!
Make getting loud fun! Activities that give students the chance to get loud will enhance participation, enjoyment and therefore donations. Activities like a colour run, colourful craft projects or any other loud activity you can think of can create an awesome atmosphere while celebrating a great cause!

Lastly you can download lots of free resources from our Loud Shirt Day page. There’s lots of posters and “how to” resources that are only a click away!
