On Saturday 11th November, about 40 delegates attended The Shepherd Centre’s first ever alumni conference held at The University of Sydney Business School.
Attendees were past students aged from 13 – 45 as well as a number of past and current parents.
It was a full day of speakers covering topics including:
- Hearing technology future insights, presented by Cochlear Ltd’s Chief Software Architect
- Succeeding in mainstream education with tips from university graduates with hearing impairment
- How to best deal with disability, deafness, diversity in employment, presented by the MD of Beaumont HR consulting.
We also talked about being part of a special community known as the “hearing, speaking deaf” community.
It was so inspiring to feel the support, love & determination to overcome obstacles in the room and to share stories of success and hopes and plans for the future.
The feedback received from the day was all very positive and we are encouraged to hold similar events in the future. One delegate commented
”I really enjoyed meeting others like me! I don’t meet many people who are deaf of hearing impaired…presentations were really valuable.”
