First Sounds Implant Program

First Sounds Implant Program

The First Sounds Implant Program provides early access to sound for children with hearing loss who require devices such as Cochlear implants. The program provides audiological, medical and family support; as well as speech, language and listening services in one central location. The services are integrated to maximise the listening, speech, language and social benefits to your child and help them reach their full potential in a professional, family-friendly and supportive environment.

Group programs

Group programs

Although your child can develop their listening, speech and language skills in a quiet therapy room, they need opportunities to practise and improve these skills in more ‘real world’ situations with the support of trained professionals, particularly to develop their social skills. Parents all have the opportunity to learn from each other at our group sessions. Some of our programs include Confident Kids, Kidscape, Off to School, Sing and Grow and Empower Me.

TUNING INTO KIDS PROGRAM

A six-week group education and intervention program for parents teaching fundamental skills in how to guide and coach their child with hearing loss to develop emotional intelligence. Perfect for helping children develop these social and self-management skills to assist their participation in their community and natural settings.

CONFIDENT KIDS PROGRAM (9-12YRS)

Children with hearing loss are at significantly increased risk of social exclusion and emotional health concerns including anxiety and depression as they develop through their adolescent and teenage years. This program works with children to address their concerns towards their disability, and defining their sense of self and individual identity.

FIRST SOUNDS FUNDAMENTALS PACKAGE

Recommended for children going through device evaluation and not accessing a package program. The First Sounds package provides a child and their family with a core communication assessment, 2 family meetings with the team, 4 evaluation sessions, and 12 post device/implantation habilitation sessions and 2 consultation sessions with the team Child and Family Counsellor.  Families are able to attend our weekly non enrolled Kidscape specialised early intervention group at any of our centres with their child or just for the parent sessions.

Teleintervention Program

The Shepherd Centre’s Teleintervention Program offers outreach specialist services to children with hearing loss, via online video-conferencing sessions. This program is available to all families regardless of their location but is particularly important for families in rural and remote regions of Australia who are unable to access our five centres in person; or families based overseas. We can also use our videoconferencing facilities if a family member is unable to attend a session but would like to be a part of it by dialling in whilst the other family member and child is undertaking a session at one of our centres.

Empower Me workshop

Empower Me workshop

We provide support for families of children with hearing loss. Our Empower Me workshop is designed for caregivers and extended family of children and young adults with hearing loss at The Shepherd Centre, but we also cater for those who are not the clients of The Shepherd Centre – everyone is welcome!

The importance of family members – both immediate and extended – is paramount in a child’s development. Our Empower Me Workshop aims to develop resilience and capacity within the support network of children or young adults with hearing loss in order to help develop their peer relationships and social skills.
