early intervention for children with hearing loss

What are the benefits of early intervention?

The first two years of life are a critical time for a child’s speech and language development. Undetected or untreated hearing loss during this period can greatly affect a child’s ability to connect with others.

Programs for children with hearing loss can begin as soon as a child is diagnosed, in this case, the sooner really is the better. Starting a program as soon as possible gives your child the best start for school and beyond.

FAQ

We help children who have a confirmed hearing loss diagnosis.

If your child has not been diagnosed with hearing loss please visit Hearing Australia.

The Shepherd Centre sees children from as little as one or two weeks old up to 18 years of age. The most important part is that you contact us as soon as your child has been diagnosed with hearing loss.

We offer hearing loss programs and services tailored to support the needs of infants, toddlers, school-age children and teenagers.

  • Early Intervention Programs: Tailored support for your child to develop listening, speech, and language skills. Our specialist team of audiologists, listening and spoken language therapists, and child and family counsellors work collaboratively to ensure the best possible outcome for your child and family.
  • School-Age Programs: Support for your child in primary and secondary school to help them succeed academically and socially.
  • Speech therapy for kids: Your child will receive ongoing support from a paediatric speech pathologist targeting speech, language, & literacy.

We provide services across 12 locations and online.

These locations include centres in Newtown, Launceston and Hobart.

The Shepherd Centre is a registered NDIS service provider and we have a wealth of experience helping many families go through the NDIS planning process. We’re here to help your child access the NDIS supports they need.

To ensure we can remain committed to early intervention and supporting family and children in need, the cost of our services is covered in part by the NDIS and the remainder is contributed via the generous support of our donors. Our families are not out of pocket if they have an approved NDIS plan. The Shepherd Centre works on an outcomes-based model where we provide the necessary supports required for each child and family to achieve the best possible outcomes regardless of the level of NDIS funding they have been provided.

90% of children with hearing loss are born to hearing parents. With modern technologies and speech therapy techniques children with hearing loss can achieve remarkable results and depending on their condition can reach the same level of speech and language as their hearing peers.
