Helen’s Story

Helen Devenish-Meares has been one of The Shepherd Centre’s most devoted supporters for nearly five decades. Born in the country, Helen’s story begins with a friendship that would shape her lifelong commitment to helping children with hearing loss. She met Annette Shepherd when they both attended the same boarding school in Sydney, becoming best friends straight away and doing everything together.

Helen’s incredible kindness spans nearly five decades, beginning with her first donation in 1978, after Annette’s mission to help children with hearing loss was already underway. Today, her legacy continues through a thoughtful gift she has included in her Will, ensuring that children with hearing loss will receive life-changing support for generations to come.

Annette was an incredible person, always giving to others. When she met Bruce Shepherd and had two deaf children, her mission became finding the best possible help for them and others who would benefit. She was the driving force behind the foundation of The Shepherd Centre, and naturally Helen wanted to support her dear friend in any way she could.

A passionate gardener and talented cook, Helen still enjoys entertaining and spending time with loved ones. With her ever-youthful spirit, she is now eagerly planning her 90th birthday celebration later this year.

When Sue asked Helen about her dedication to The Shepherd Centre, Helen explained that The Shepherd Centre was her original charity, and she thinks it’s an important cause. She sympathises with any parent who has children with hearing loss and feels very sorry for the children who need to learn what most of us take for granted.

Even after Annette’s tragic passing in the 1990s, Helen’s dedication never wavered. By leaving a gift in her Will, she finds comfort in knowing that her legacy will carry forward, not just as a reflection of her values, but also in Annette’s memory. It’s a lasting tribute to the lifelong friendship they shared.

A few weeks ago, Key Supporter Manager Sue Attar had the pleasure of sitting with Helen on her porch as she shared her inspiring story. During their conversation, Sue discovered Helen’s lifelong passion for painting beautiful watercolors that are not only featured on the walls of her home but also displayed in exhibitions from time to time, the first being at the Botanic Gardens in the 1980s.

Helen has been blessed with good health throughout her life. As she shared with Sue, she has children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and they are all fortunate to be blessed with good health. Though she has no personal experience with hearing loss, her empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by families affected by it has driven her unwavering support.

By leaving a gift in her Will, she finds comfort in knowing that her legacy will carry forward, not just as a reflection of her values, but also in Annette’s memory. It serves as a lasting tribute to the lifelong friendship they shared and ensures that countless more children will develop the skills to listen, speak, and thrive.

Helen’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person’s generosity can have across generations. Her kindness has helped countless children with hearing loss, and her legacy will continue to make a lasting difference for years to come.
