A Legacy of Love That Spans Decades

At The Shepherd Centre, we are deeply grateful for the unwavering generosity of Helen Devenish-Meares, one of our longest-standing supporters.

Helen’s incredible kindness spans nearly five decades, beginning with her first donation in 1978. Today, her legacy of support continues through a gift she has thoughtfully included in her Will, helping to ensure that children with hearing loss will receive the life-changing support they need for generations to come.

In Helen’s Own Words

A few weeks ago,  Key Supporter Manager Sue Attar had the pleasure of sitting with Helen on her porch as she shared her inspiring story.

Sue soon discovered her lifelong passion for painting beautiful watercolors that are not only a feature on the walls of her home but also displayed in exhibitions from time to time the first being at the Botanic Gardens in the 1980’s.

A passionate gardener and talented cook, Helen still enjoys entertaining and spending time with loved ones. With her ever-youthful spirit, she is now eagerly planning her 90th birthday celebration later this year.

Sue asked her a few questions about her dedication to The Shepherd Centre and this is what she said:

Q: Why did you start donating to The Shepherd Centre so long ago?

A: I was born in the country and met Annette Shepherd when we both attended the same boarding school in Sydney. We became best friends straight away and did everything together. She was an incredible person, always giving to others. When she met Bruce Shepherd and had two deaf children, her mission was to find the best possible help for them – and of course for others that would benefit. She was the driving force behind the foundation of The Shepherd Centre and naturally I wanted to support her in any way I could.

Q: What makes you continue for all these years, especially given that Annette tragically passed away in the ‘90s?

A: The Shepherd Centre was my original charity, and I think it’s an important cause. I sympathise with any parent who has children with hearing loss and feel very sorry for the children who need to learn what most of us take for granted.

By leaving a gift in my Will, I find comfort in knowing that my legacy will carry forward, not just as a reflection of my values, but also in Annette’s memory. It’s a lasting tribute to the lifelong friendship we shared.

Q: Do you have personal experience with hearing loss?

A: No, we are all very fortunate. I have children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and we are all blessed with good health.

Helen’s story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person’s generosity can have across generations. Her kindness has helped countless children develop the skills to listen, speak, and thrive. Thank you, Helen, and to all our incredible supporters, for making such a lasting difference in the lives of children with hearing loss.
