Anjali’s journey is a testament to the life-changing work we do at The Shepherd Centre and the transformative impact of early intervention for deaf children.
Born with a profound bilateral hearing loss, her family was quickly connected with us to help Anjali learn to listen and speak. When she was just five months old, she underwent her first life-changing cochlear implant surgery for her right ear in 2009, followed by a second surgery for her left ear in 2010.
The Hon. Bill Shorten MP witnessed the 2009 procedure, gaining insight into the incredible technology and seeing firsthand how early intervention can transform the lives of deaf children.
Fast forward to today, Anjali is a thriving 15-year-old.
“She’s in the school band, playing the trumpet, and is active in school dance performances. She plays netball, works part-time at Subway, and loves TikTok. Most importantly, she’s a strong advocate for herself,” shared her mother, Priya.
Her incredible achievements reflect her hard work, her family’s dedication, and the unwavering support of The Shepherd Centre.
On Tuesday 19 November , Anjali, her parents, and The Hon. Bill Shorten MP were reunited at Parliament House in Canberra after 15 years. It was a heartwarming moment as Mr. Shorten saw the incredible opportunities that The Shepherd Centre has opened for Anjali and countless other children.
