Sue’s Supporter Spotlight

Hello everyone,

I know it’s a cliche, but I seriously can’t believe how the time has flown. Not only are we a quarter of the way through the year, but it’s already been six months since I started working at The Shepherd Centre.

It’s been an incredible whirlwind of learning and growth for me during this time, so I thought that I’d share three of my favourite experiences so far.

Last October I had the privilege of attending three Graduation Ceremonies – one at Parliament House (see pic below), one in our Newtown head office and one at our Macquarie Centre. Each of these three events was unique, yet all shared the same heartwarming moment—seeing these unique children, dressed in their finest, proudly accepting their certificates as they prepare to take their next big step into mainstream school this year.

Witnessing firsthand the life-changing impact of our work for deaf children and their families was a powerful reminder of why I’m so passionate about being part of The Shepherd Centre and I’m truly grateful for your continued support in making this possible.

I’ve also had the opportunity to sit in on some of the programs we run for the children and/or families and (warning – another cliche) – seeing really is believing because to watch what happens with your own eyes really does open your eyes as to how much is involved.

The second stand-out experience was reading the responses to our Supporter Survey from hundreds of supporters who took the time to respond. It was extremely interesting to read all the answers, not to mention important for us to understand exactly what you want. A heartfelt thank you to everyone that participated – and may I add that it was most reassuring that we rated very highly for the question that asked if you would recommend a friend to The Shepherd Centre.

And last but most definitely not least, my number three stand-out is having the privilege of meeting over 20 supporters face to face, some in their homes and some in nearby cafes.  Unfortunately, I don’t have the space to mention all of them individually, however they were all truly inspirational for various reasons.

They were all extremely kind and giving people, that much was clear from the outset, but what I found most interesting was why they gave to The Shepherd Centre (either via a regular donation or by leaving a gift in their Will to The Shepherd Centre).

Their answers were varied. Some gave because they knew Annette or Bruce Shepherd and realised firsthand how tirelessly they worked to create our organisation. Some liked to support children’s charities. Some had friends who had children who were born deaf or friends that had hearing problems. And then there were those that had no particular affinity with The Shepherd Centre or deaf children at all, they merely wanted to give back to those less fortunate than themselves.

Irrespective of the ‘why’, all these supporters were beautiful kind souls who not only want to give back but also know how much we appreciate their gifts, no matter how large or small, because they all go towards making our Centre the best that it can be.

I’ve been fortunate to have had these experiences due to your incredible generosity. Everything you give helps us to grow and continue the work we do for generations to come, ensuring that all deaf children will be able to grow up in a world of choice.

Until next time, take care,
